FAQ for Planning Enforcement | Contact for Planning Enforcement

The Council's Planning Service seeks to make Redbridge a better place to live. To this end we will seek to remove, or improve to a satisfactory level, all unauthorised developments that detract from the amenity of the Borough.

How you can help us

When reporting a breach it helps to give as much information as possible, both about what is happening and what has happened in the past.

This can include details of:

  • when activities or building works started
  • names and contact details of known owners
  • other people involved.

To make reporting easier we have produced a form you can complete and return to the following address:

London Borough of Redbridge
Planning Services
P.O. Box 2
Town Hall
128-142 High Road
Ilford
Essex
IG1 1DD

Important points to bear in mind

  • All reported breaches of planning control will be investigated, providing we have received a fully completed and signed complaint form.
  • The identity of complainants is kept confidential by the Council but may have to be revealed in later proceedings.
  • The carrying out of unauthorised works or uses is not initially a criminal offence (except for works to listed buildings, certain types of advertising signs and certain works to trees).
  • In most cases, a criminal offence only occurs after a formal enforcement notice has been served, taken effect and its requirements have not been complied with.
  • Enforcement action is discretionary and the Council has to be sure that action is justified.
  • In line with Government advice, the Council will usually try to negotiate to remedy a breach in the first instance.

We aim to provide a quality service in what can sometimes be a difficult area of planning work and welcome any information that may assist us in our work.
