The Duke of Edinburgh Award was first piloted for
boys in the UK in 1956 and then opened to girls and the rest
of the Commonwealth countries in 1958. In 1969, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award for
Young People (both men and women) aged 14 to 21 was
launched.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme isn't only about
mountaineering, potholing and camping - it includes many other
activities. Monday nights have a range of activities related
to the Award, including Bollywood dancing, DJ-ing, badminton,
volleyball and the production of the Duke of Edinburgh
newsletter. Wednesday nights focus on expedition and
training.
