About the School

Ethel Davis and Hyleford Schools amalgamated with effect from 1 September 2005 to form a new special school known as Newbridge School. The school will cater for the same range of special educational needs as before i.e. those with severe and complex learning difficulties with associated:

  • Physical difficulties
  • Sensory impairments
  • Medical needs
  • Autistic spectrum disorders

The site formerly known as Hyleford School will be known as Newbridge School - Loxford Lane Campus and Ethel Davis School as Newbridge School - Barley Lane Campus.

Over the next two to three years, pending on the extension and remodelling of both sites, it is the intention to reshape provision so that:

  • Loxford Lane Campus (Hyleford School site) will cater for pupils from Early Years to the end of Key Stage 3
  • Barley Lane Campus (Ethel Davis School site) will cater for pupils between 14 and 21 years of age

We also aim to establish learning bases in a number of mainstream schools within Redbridge to promote opportunities for inclusion for some of our pupils.

Hyleford School made provision for students between the ages of 16 and 19 years at a separate unit at Starch House Lane in Barkingside. This unit closed at the end of the 2004/2005 school year and students not due to leave transferred to the Barley Lane Campus (Ethel Davis School site) along with Year 11 students from Hyleford School for the start of the 2005/2006 school year. All other pupils at Newbridge School remained at their 2004/2005 location for the 2005/2006 school year.
