About the School

Highlands Primary School in a 3 forms of entry school, with a separate nursery with places for 60 part time pupils, situated on Highlands Gardens in Ilford, Essex.  It is within walking distance of both Redbridge tube and Ilford main-line stations.  Located on a quiet residential street it can also be accessed by a number of bus routes.

The school was built in 1905 and every effort is made to maintain the unique character and attractive features of the school, whilst providing many modern facilities which include a large computer room, drama studio and an activity room for pupils on Reception classes and Key Stage 1.

In 1997 Highlands benefited from a new building which linked two previously seperate buildings.  This provided an attractive main entrance and welcome area, administration, caretaking and Head Teacher's offices and a first aid room.  "The Link Building" also provided a staff-room and various other offices.

Highlands is a "Learning to Learn" school.  We are involved in an exciting research project which is focused on how brain based research can enhance the effectiveness of our teaching and learning.

Highlands is one of the largest schools in the area and has its full complement of Art, Maths, English, Science, Music, Drama and ICT facilities.  Children's learning benefits from a large stock of curriculum support resources, ranging from computers, a wide range of musical instruments and tools for technology, science and maths, to well a resourced classroom reading and art area, and equipment to encourage physical and sporting prowess.

We currently have actively competitive rugby, netball and football teams as well as numerous other extra curricula clubs and societies.  These include African drumming, Indian dance and instrumental playing (sitar, harmonium and tabla) drama, recorders and orchestra.  Some of these clubs are NOF funded.

At Highlands we celebrate a rich and vibrant ethnically diverse culture which celebrates our unity as well as our differences.  The recent Ofsted report confirmed that Highlands "is a very good school with many excellent features".
