Population, Table KS01
Redbridge had a population of 238,635 people on Census day
2001.
This figure was made up of 48.5% males (115,849) and 51.5% females
(122,786).
Redbridge has seen an increase of 16,600 people, or 7.5%,
since the 1991 mid-year estimate of population, the 11th highest
increase across London and 67th highest across England and Wales,
where the average increase was 2.5%. This rise is higher than the
outer London increase of 4.2% and the inner London increase of
6.4%.
There were 2,443 students living away from home and 1% of the
population living in communal establishments such as care homes,
residential homes or hospital.
Age, Table KS02
The 2001 Census shows the breakdown of the Redbridge population
by age as:
- 21.4% (50,991) children aged 0 to 15 years of
age
- 71.8% (171,300) people aged 16 to
74
- 6.9% (16,344) people aged 75 or
over
The percentage of people in these age bands is similar to the
average for England and Wales. There are more people in
the 16 to 74 age group in inner London (75.8%) than the norm,
particularly in the 20-44 age group.
There has been a slight increase in young people within the
borough, from 22% in 1991 to 24% in 2001, along with a slight
decrease in over 65's from 16% to 14%.
The average age in Redbridge is 36.99 years of age, which is
slightly lower than the England and Wales average of 38.65.
Household size, Table KS19
Redbridge has a higher than average household size of 2.56
people per household. (The term "household" includes bed-sits and
flats). This is the 6th largest average household size in
England and Wales and 4th highest in London, with Newham, a
neighbouring borough, first with 2.64 people per
household.
Household composition, Table KS20
Within Redbridge:
- 1 in 5 (20.3%) of households consist
of a married couple with dependent children*. This is slightly
higher than the England and Wales average of 17.6%.
- Nearly a third (29.1%) are one person
households and 13.4% are single pensioners.
- 10.4% of households are lone parent
households and 6.6% of households are lone parents with
dependent children.
- 2.1% of households are co-habiting couples
with dependent children.
Lone Parents, Table KS22
Of the 6,047 lone parent households, 91.8% (5,552) are
female lone parent households and 8.2% (495) are male lone parent
households.
- Male lone parents are far more likely to have
a full-time job, with 6.7% working part-time and 55.6% working
full-time.
- Within the female lone parent households,
17.2% work part-time and 24.8% work full-time.
- There are also 3,540 lone parents living with non-dependent
children, (3.84% of households). This is the 20th highest in
England and Wales.
Dependent children, Table KS21
In total, 33.2% of all households (30,690) have dependent
children and 13.4% (12,320) have a dependent child who is under 5
years of age. These figures are slightly higher than the England
and Wales averages of 29.5% and 11.4% respectively.
* Dependent children are aged 0 - 15 (whether or not in a
family), or a person aged 16 - 18 who is a full-time student and in
a family with parent(s).
Household density, Table KS02
Redbridge has 42.3 people per hectare. This is the 20th highest
in London overall, where the average is 45.62 per hectare. Within
inner London, the average is 86.6 and outer London, 35.17.
Redbridge has the 7th highest population density in outer London
and the 23rd highest in England and Wales, where the average
is 3.4 people per hectare.
Family Status
Household living arrangements, Table KS03
Within Redbridge, over half of adults are living in a
couple (57.1%), and are generally married or remarried (49.7%).
This is higher than the London averages, with Redbridge ranking 5th
highest in London for the percentage of people being married or
re-married, but similar to the England and Wales average of 50.9%.
Redbridge has a lower than average percentage of couples
cohabiting, (7.4%) compared to London and England and Wales as a
whole.
Marital status, Table KS04
Within the borough, 32.3% of over 16's are single and have
never married, 51.2% are married or re-married, 8.8% are divorced
or separated and 7.7% are widowed. The percentage who are divorced
(6.4%) is lower than the average for London (7.4%)
and for England and Wales (8.2%).
Migration, Table KS24
A migrant is a person whose address a year before the date of
the Census is different to their current address. In Redbridge:
- 10.7% of the Redbridge population (25,445
people) had moved into, or within Redbridge, during
the year prior to the 2001 Census.
- Of these, 11,995 moved into Redbridge from
within the UK
- 1,919 from outside the UK
- 9,001 moved within Redbridge
- 2,530 had no usual address a year
before*
- 12,881 people (5.4%) moved out of
Redbridge
The movement of Black and Minority Ethnic Groups is also taken
into account in migration. For Redbridge, nearly half of the people
migrating into or within Redbridge were non-white (11,443
people). 5,154 people from non 'white' ethnic groups moved
into Redbridge from within the UK and 1,098 from outside the
UK.
* Children under one year of age had no usual address the
year before the 2001 Census.
