Healthcare for London - Consulting the Capital

Following proposals made in a report commissioned by NHS London entitled "Healthcare for London - A framework for action" (July 2007).

Primary Care Trusts and Local Authorities London formed two pan-London groups in order to work together to examine the proposals, which set out how services could be improved healthcare over a 10-year period.

The report was written by Professor Sir Ara Darzi, now a junior Government minister.

A public consultation took place between 30 November 2007 and 7 March 2008 to respond to the report and a document called "Healthcare for London - Consulting the Capital" was made available to the public via libraries, health centres and GP and dental surgeries.

We all need to use health services at some point in our lives and people in Redbridge were given opportunities to say what they thought could be done to ensure better, safer and more accessible healthcare in the Borough, so if you contributed to this consultation, thanks for having your say!

Pan London Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee (JOSC) Review

As part of the consultation, Scrutiny Committees across London and in South East England joined together for the first time to set up a pan-London Joint Overview and Scrutiny Committee ( JOSC ) to review the proposals of Sir Ara Darzi’s report.

This is the first time a joint local authority JOSC has operated on such a scale, representing a population of over seven million Londoners and residents in Essex and Surrey.

Papers relating to the review are available below:

Minutes of the meeting held on 25 April 2008 - to follow.

What happens after this review has taken place?

Once NHS London has considered the recommendations and responses received from the Primary Care Trust group, other organisations and the public, they will publish their views on how the proposals could best be applied to local services and will seek to consult with local residents.

The pan-London JOSC is due to meet again in the Autumn to receive this feedback.

Cllr Thomas Chan, Cabinet Lead for Housing and Health said: " I welcome this report and appreciate the dedication of all the representatives and contributors in undertaking such an inclusive and well planned review.

"I share the concern that NHS and local authority colleagues need to work more in partnership, which is essential to the delivery of a more integrated health and social care service.

I look forward to future opportunities for local residents to shape health and social are services that meet their needs."
