What is an Area Committee?

An Area Committee is a meeting of Ward Councillors able to make decisions on local issues. Each Committee has a budget that it can spend on local initiatives.

What kinds of things do Area Committees do?

Area Committees may:

  • Examine local road management schemes;
  • Examine parks and leisure issues;
  • Examine environmental issues and monitor local service delivery, such as street sweeping; and
  • Consider local housing issues.

Please note that planning applications are no longer determined at Area Committees - they are now determined at a Regional Planning Committee.

Why have Area Committees?

Area committees allow local people to talk directly to local Councillors about issues in their area. Each meeting has time allocated for residents to ask questions and talk about local matters that they feel are important. Area Committees consult residents, local groups, organisations and businesses on a wide range of matters.

How can I participate?

Each Area Committee allows public participation in the following ways:

By providing a period time at the start of the meeting to hear issues of a local nature; and

By inviting comments and/or questions on the items of business as the meeting discusses each agenda item.
