Valuation appeals

Your bill shows which band your home has been placed in for Council Tax purposes. You can appeal against the Valuation banding within 6 months of becoming the taxpayer. If your Council Tax band changes you have 6 months to appeal. The Listing Officer (not the Council) is responsible for banding.

If you want to appeal you have to write to the Listing Officer for the Valuation Office Agency (VOA).

Council Tax appeals

You can appeal if you think:

  • your property should be exempt; for example, if it is unfurnished and has been unoccupied for less than 6 months.
  • you are not responsible for paying the bill; for example, if your property is let to a tenant.
  • you should not pay the full amount of Council Tax; for example, if your are the only adult living in the property.

If you wish to appeal, you must write to us giving your reasons. We aim to give you a decision within 10 working days.

If you are not happy with our decision you can appeal in writing to an independent Valuation Tribunal. You must do this within 2 months of our decision.
