More than one in three residents identify having good schools as the most important factor in making an area a good place to live.

Redbridge has continued to deliver strong performance in education in 2007/08.A better place to learn

  • Our schools rank among the top in the nation with 77 per cent judged as good or better and nearly 30 per cent judged as outstanding under the new Ofsted inspection framework.
  • Redbridge was ranked first in London and second in the country for GCSE results, with more than 95 per cent of students achieving five passes.
  • Primary school attendance increased from 93.5 per cent in 2006/07 to 94.9 per cent in 2007/08, above the national average.
  • 14 new Children’s Centres were designated in 2007/08, exceeding our target by six. These provide a one-stop shop for young children and parents, providing access to family health care, advice and guidance about bringing up children, early education and childcare.
  • The proportion of young people achieving Level 2 qualifications by age 19 increased from 78.2 per cent to 80.2 per cent.
  • Permanent exclusions were reduced by 50 per cent over the Spring term 2007 to 2008 and provided 25 hours of alternative tuition for all students remaining permanently excluded in 2007/08.
  • We opened two new schools, Winston Way Primary and Cranbrook Primary School, between September 2007 and March 2008.

We have improved education services for adults as well:

  • We set a target of 200 adults from deprived communities to take up learning, and ran 71 courses for adult learners over the course of last year. Some 560 learners participated in the courses, exceeding our target by 360.
  • We also launched the Adult Learners’ Week in May 2007 and received a good outcome on the Ofsted Annual Monitoring visit in 2007.
