The London Borough Redbridge has made a positive commitment to
equality and diversity by ensuring that its services meet the needs
of all of the borough's communities. The Equalities function
seeks to ensure that the Council fulfils the duties and
responsibilities that it has under the Equalities legislation and
the Equalities Standard for Local Government.
The Council has committed itself to:
"...Provide quality services which are relevant to the
needs and responsive to the views of all sections of the local
community, irrespective of their race, gender, disability, culture,
religion, age, sexual orientation or marital status
etc."
Similarly the Council's Equal Opportunities (Employment) Policy
Statement:
"...Highlights the Councils commitment to equality of
opportunity for each and every member of its workforce in the areas
of recruitment, training and all other employment
practices."
The Council believes that by mainstreaming equalities into all
that we do will enhance the quality of our services and help to
deliver best value. It is the Council's policy to work
positively to reduce inequality with all our customers and
employees by ensuring that they are treated equitably, fairly,
without discrimination and with dignity and respect, regardless of
their: race, gender, disability, age, sexuality, religion or trade
union membership status.
The Council believes that it is our duty to promote equal
opportunity and to take positive steps to redress inequality.
In turn, we expect our employees and partners to respect and comply
with UK Government Legislation and Policies.
The Council consider it necessary for organisations that intend
to supply goods or services on behalf of Redbridge Council to
demonstrate that reasonable and practicable steps have been taken
to allow equal access and treatment in employment and services for
all.
In order to meet its duties under the amended Race Relations
Act, the Council developed and published the Race Equality Scheme
setting out how it will address the specific duties that it has
under the Act. The Scheme has been reviewed and a new generic
Equalities Scheme drafted to replace it. This new Equalities
Scheme covers:
- race
- disability
- gender
- age
- sexual orientation
- religious belief.
The Council has also adopted the Equality Standard for Local
Government (ESLG) which is a generic equalities standard allowing
the Council to monitor its progress over time by having five levels
of achievement which build on themselves. The Council has
currently achieved Level Two of this standard and is working
towards Level Three.
