Certain products may not be sold to young persons who have
not reached a specified age. Retailers have a
responsibility to ensure that they and their staff do not sell
restricted products to underage persons.
It is an offence to supply any of these products to persons who
have not attained the specified age. If you are found guilty
of an offence then you can be fined up to £5000 or receive a 6
month prison sentence or both.
Retailers are advised to implement procedures so that they can
show they are exercising due diligence. The Council offers advice on due diligence for retailers on
what steps to take, promotes various support
schemes for traders and is working in partnership with
Citizencard to provide young persons in
the Borough with a means of proving their age.
