FAQ for Food standards - Labelling | Contact for Food standards - Labelling

The labelling of food is generally governed by the Food Labelling Regulations 1996 (as well as some others to a small extent). The labelling regulations require the majority of foods to be labelled with:-

  • Name of the food
  • Ingredients
  • "Best Before" or "Use By date"
  • Storage conditions
  • Name and address
  • Instructions for use

The regulations make it an automatic offence to sell or expose for sale any food beyond its "Use By" date.
