FAQ for Dangerous wild animals licence | Contact for Dangerous wild animals licence

Under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 certain animals and reptiles are listed as being dangerous.

The Act came into force because of the importation of exotic pets such as primates and reptiles into this country without any regulations. It does not apply to licensed zoos, pet shops (although owners must advise us if they keep listed animals), circuses or to registered establishments for carrying out animal experiments.

Whilst purchase of these is possible, the individual purchaser requires a licence to keep them. Those  animals etc. which should be licensed are listed in a schedule of the Act. Should you be unable to obtain this schedule  or have any query regarding an exotic animal which you are considering to purchase you can check the list of the most common restricted animals or contact the licensing service who will check to see if you need one.

Very strict rules apply for the construction of the animals accommodation and a veterinary officer's inspection will always be required.

Persons keeping animals on the list without a licence run the risk of prosecution and confiscation of the animal.
